Ranks
An example of the rank system goes as follows:
- Alpha: the leader of the pack, oversees its members, and
holds a large responsibility for the behavior of their pack. The main
decision-maker for the rest of the pack. Decided by the pack members or in a
rank fight.
- Beta: the second highest rank, when the alpha
"dies" (or steps down) the Beta becomes the Alpha. Rank decided by
the pack members, or the Alpha, or in a rank fight.
- Gamma, Delta, etc: Third, fourth, etc in rank, decided by
the pack members or the Alpha and Beta or in a rank fight.
Skagit Valley (wolf pack) uses a rank system like this:
Keeping it simple, only having an Alpha and a Beta. Alpha is chosen by the rest
of the pack, or earned in a rank fight. Beta is chosen by the Alpha, by the rest
of the pack, or earned in a rank fight. Only Beta can challenge the Alpha for
Alpha rank, or Alpha may choose a new Beta altogether. Anyone may challenge the
Beta. If the Alpha is unable to do his or her job or steps down, the Beta will
becomes Alpha, and a new Beta is chosen. The whole pack should try to be
involved in the pack meetings when we choose new ranks.
Everyone
should be sure to show up for meetings, or they might not get a say in things.
Only one player's vote counts when choosing ranks, rather than an
individual character that they play. If someone plays multiple characters the
owner of the characters says who they vote for, then we know what to count in
case their characters have opposing viewpoints. Anyone may call a pack meeting,
no matter what the concern. Not everyone has to attend, but if decisions are
made during the pack meetings, they might be missing out.
The mates of the Alpha or
Beta will be treated as an equal, respect-wise, and have the 'alpha' or 'beta'
title. But the elected Alpha would be the decision-maker with the most power. No
matter if they are male or female. If the elected Alpha or Beta is changed,
their mate won't stay alpha or beta, either. (similar to the 'first lady')
Ranks will stay in
'office' for approximately a month before they can be challenged or re-elected,
at any time the rank-holders may step down or call a pack meeting for a new
rank-holder to be chosen for their position. The challengers are 'first come
first serve' basically. The rank-holders can choose who they want to fight,
though. If they do not want to fight then a pack meeting will be called
and a new rank-holder will be chosen through an election-type event. If the
majority of the pack doesn't like the outcome of the rank fight, they can choose
a new Alpha or Beta, no matter who won. (this is to prevent newcomers from
battling and gaining rank, if the majority of the pack doesn't agree, or to keep
someone from staying in 'office' too long) If the pack likes the Alpha or Beta,
he/she can stay in 'office' for as long as the pack sees fit.
These examples are
not requirements for you to run your pack. You can have any rank setup you
can imagine, or none at all. These are simply just examples to give an idea of
how other packs are run. |
